A strong spin-orbit interaction (SOI) can be induced in metallic thin films by proximity to monolayer tungsten diselenide (WSe2), a semiconductor with intrinsic strong Ising SOI. The upper critical field of the thin-film superconductor is enhanced by the induced SOI, even though the zero-field critical temperature is unchanged or reduced.

Proximity effect on the critical temperature in 8 nm thick Al/monolayer WSe2 heterostructure. The upper critical field is enhanced with the induced spin-orbit interaction in Al thin film.
Phase diagram for Al and Al/WSe2 samples. With the interface coupling from WSe2, Al thin film phase diagram is significantly changed.
